In response to a question by:

The first balloon flight happened in 1783 in France when the Montgolfier brothers launched a smoke balloon as a demonstration for the King of France. As I recall, it occurred sometime in October but the precise date escapes me. Any help out there with this one? (Don, you weren't there, were you? )
