The Global Hilton launched at 6:20 MST to the cheers of the crowd and the sound of horns and sirens.
The tethered balloon hovered at five feet while more helium was added and the burners activated. After fifteen minutes of checking rigging the order to launch was given and the balloon took to the sky at what seemed like 500 FPM or more.
Now, ten minutes later the balloon appears to be above the level of the Crest (12,000'+) and traveling at a fairly slow rate of speed.
The balloon was predicted to head west, then north, then east over Texas and Georgia. Looking from my front yard, the balloon is traveling east with two news helicopters hovering around it.
It's quite an exciting morning in ABQ.
